Tips for staying healthy this winter season

This winter, the whole Salem-Keizer community can work together to keep our schools, students and community safe and healthy.

Remember to follow some simple precautions to prevent illness:

  • Stay home when sick.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid the sharing of cups and utensils.
  • Wash hands regularly for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth and keep your hands away from your or your child’s face.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces that are often touched, such as doorknobs and electronic devices.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Consider wearing a mask in crowded indoor settings, especially if you or someone in your home is at high risk for severe disease.
  • CDC recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older get a flu vaccine annually.

School meals provided free for all SKPS students for 2022-23 school year

Salem-Keizer Public Schools is participating in a federal program available as part of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program called, Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). For the 2022-2023 school year, a nutritious breakfast and lunch are available to all SKPS students at school sites at no charge. Students enrolled in the EDGE program can access breakfast and lunch by contacting their home school or program principal.

Important Message for the First Day of the 2020-21 School Year

English Message from Superintendent Christy Perry:

Salem-Keizer Students and Families,

Tomorrow we launch our first official day of school. On day one we are focusing on a shortened schedule, care and connection between students and their teacher and learning the online tools. We will extend this learning into Thursday and Friday depending on the needs of our students and some important fixes that our partner Canvas is working diligently to fix on behalf of our students.

A couple changes to what you can expect:

K-2 Students not enrolled in EDGE will be using See Saw.  The See Saw Platform can no longer be integrated with Clever for Badge Sign in. It was important for us to disable this in order to have the most secure online environment for our youngest learners. Instead of using CLEVER you will click – login through Google. Either your school or your child’s classroom teacher will be sending you a Remind message or an email with this information.

Grades 3-12 and K-2 student in EDGE are using  Canvas – Canvas is experiencing technical difficulties in integrating all student rosters into the Canvas platform in SKPS and in other school districts. We are hopeful it will be resolved by tomorrow or Thursday. I know Canvas is diligently working to resolve the issue. This is not due to human error on the part of SK staff or your child’s teachers. Once everything is synced the student experience will be a better platform for organizing the work.

Students will receive a message in their email with a link to a Zoom meeting for their advisory class tomorrow. They will be asked to join their class through this link. Thursday and Friday comprehensive distance learning will occur either through Zoom or Canvas so please have your students check their email each day. As with the start of any school year our focus this week is creating classroom communities with your students and learning the rules of the road in this time.

For our EDGE Families

  1. EDGE students are concurrently enrolled at their home school and EDGE.  When looking at Parent Vue and Student Vue, click on your student’s schedule.  This will show the courses are in the EDGE program.
  2. Patience is key!  EDGE is the size of Corvallis School District and we have only been going for 6-8 weeks.  We are still hiring staff.  The priority right now is placing students in schedules and having teachers there ready to greet the students.
  3. We are working through all the calls and emails and will respond to your directly as quickly as we can. Your student will not fail a course as a result of our systems not being fully operational.

Families, do your best. None of us will be perfect when we start. We are here for you and we are excited to see you tomorrow.

2020 August Commencement Schedule | 2020 Fechas y ubicaciones de las graduaciones

Overview

With Marion and Polk Counties now in phase two of reopening, we are prioritizing our students in holding multiple small-scale, in-person graduation ceremonies for our graduating seniors, in alignment with priority two (see below).

Specific details about each commencement ceremony will be communicated with students and families directly from their school in the coming weeks. In general, ceremonies will consist of approximately 45 graduates with four (4) guest tickets per graduate. These numbers allow our schools to safely maintain social distancing guidelines set forth by our health authorities, while adhering to the limit of 250 maximum attendees.

Facial coverings will be strongly encouraged for all in-person graduation ceremonies and required when six-feet social distancing cannot be maintained. Graduates and their guests are asked to bring their own facial covering to use during commencement.
 
If you are sick or have a family member sick with symptoms resembling the flu or COVID-19, please stay home.

With the support of Capital Community Television (CCTV) all ceremonies will be broadcast live on CCTV, our district and school Facebook pages and CCTV’s website.

Graduation Ceremony Times

The exact time of each graduate’s commencement ceremony will be communicated directly from each high school based on the number of students indicating their plans to participate. We ask that our graduating seniors please complete a brief survey (available in their student emails) to help our schools plan for the number of ceremonies needed. By filling out this survey, graduates will be informing our schools on how to effectively carry out plans for commencement.

How Did We Get to This Decision?

In April, Salem-Keizer Public Schools (SKPS) Superintendent Christy Perry met with leaders from the Class of 2020 to discuss possible commencement plans in light of the coronavirus pandemic.  Joined by their high school principals, the students shared their wishes to prioritize in-person graduation ceremonies, even if it meant delaying them, over virtual ceremonies conducted at previously scheduled times in June.

After hearing this feedback from SKPS students, Perry met again with student leaders to review the district’s prioritized goals for graduation ceremonies, which the students approved.

Thanks to their guidance, we are able to move forward with the planning of small, in-person ceremonies.

Priority One

Priority one: a full, public graduation ceremony to take place the first week of August. This would look very similar to graduation ceremonies from previous years.

Priority Two

If, due to Governor Brown’s direction, social distancing guidelines prevent priority one from being executed, priority two will be: a smaller scale in-person ceremony.

Priority Three

If, due to Governor Brown’s direction, social distancing guidelines prevent priority two from being executed, priority three will be: a virtual graduation ceremony that will follow the look and feel of a traditional ceremony, including speeches from students and community members.

We look forward to celebrating the more than 2,000 graduates from our schools in August as they officially cross the stage for graduation and move on to the next chapter of their lives. We have no doubt that our graduates will continue to achieve incredible things in the future, and we hope our 2020 grads come back to visit in the coming years to share their accomplishments with us.

Updates to 2020-21 academic calendar | Actualizaciones del calendario académico 2020-21

In February, the Salem and Keizer communities were hit with severe inclement weather, causing widespread power outages across the district. With students and staff accessing classes through comprehensive distance learning, ongoing power outages impacted the ability for classes to continue, causing a week of school closures for SKPS students.

Due to these school closures and the transition to hybrid learning for students in grades K-12, the district needed to make the following adjustments to the 2020-21 academic calendar.

Key changes for SKPS parents/guardians

  • April 8 – School day for Elementary/ No student contact day for Secondary (EDGE program continues as previously scheduled)
  • April 9 – School day for Elementary/ No student contact day for Secondary (EDGE program continues as previously scheduled)
  • April 12 – Updated to full student support Monday, previously partial grading day for secondary
  • June 8 – Additional day added for SKPS high school graduation ceremonies
  • June 17 – Last day for students, previously June 15.

Families should also note the change in the cohort schedule for the week of June 14. To prioritize the equitable instruction time for students in each attendance cohort, on-site learning days have been shifted to Monday-Thursday from the traditional Tuesday-Friday for the week of June 14. The update to the cohort attendance days can be seen in the cohort calendar available on the district website.

Salem-Keizer Public Schools Offering Grab and Go Meals at 36 Locations

In keeping with the latest direction from Governor Kate Brown, the Oregon Health Authority and the Oregon Department of Education, Salem-Keizer Public Schools in-person classes will be canceled for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.

In order to help alleviate food insecurity, we will be offering breakfast and lunch grab and go bags, Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at more than 30 locations. Meals are available to any child or teen 18 and under.

Beginning this week, meals may include chicken patties, hamburgers and chicken nuggets. These are fully cooked and are safe to eat or can be reheated. All bagged lunches should be refrigerated within an hour.

Beginning April 27, there will be changes to our meal sites due to bond construction

 South, McNary and Claggett Creek will close. McKinley will open as a meal site to replace South. Parrish will open to replace North. The existing Weddle site will replace the Claggett Creek site and the existing Keizer and Cummings Elementary locations will replace the McNary site.

Salem-Keizer Public Schools to Close 2.5 Hours Early, No PM Preschool on May 8

This early closure comes as a result of anticipated significant staff absences

At 1:30 p.m. on May 8, the Oregon Education Association will host a “Day of Action” to advocate for full funding of the Oregon Quality Education Model. Due to limited substitute numbers and anticipated significant staff absences, Salem-Keizer Public Schools will enact a 2.5-hour early dismissal. The early closure will allow for students to receive instruction and nutrition services on an important school day. Transportation will run on the modified schedule. Afterschool care will offer extended schedules.

“We came to this decision in collaboration with Salem Keizer Education Association and with the support of the Association of Salem-Keizer Education Support Professionals,” said Superintendent Christy Perry. “We know there are extenuating circumstances like Advanced Placement exams, outdoor school and field trips. Our intent is to have the majority of these activities go on as planned.”

“Our schools can’t afford to give students what they need, so lawmakers must increase school funding.” says Mindy Merritt, teacher and President of the Salem Keizer Education Association. “Our classrooms are bursting at the seams; our students need greater access to social emotional learning and students are missing out on the individual attention they require. Our students can’t wait any longer. It’s time—past time—to invest in our schools.”
