Tips for staying healthy this winter season

This winter, the whole Salem-Keizer community can work together to keep our schools, students and community safe and healthy.

Remember to follow some simple precautions to prevent illness:

  • Stay home when sick.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid the sharing of cups and utensils.
  • Wash hands regularly for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth and keep your hands away from your or your child’s face.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces that are often touched, such as doorknobs and electronic devices.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Consider wearing a mask in crowded indoor settings, especially if you or someone in your home is at high risk for severe disease.
  • CDC recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older get a flu vaccine annually.

SKPS Class of 2022: One for the Record Books

Congratulations to the Class of 2022! All your hard work has paid off, and you are now officially high school graduates. We are so proud of you.

The Class of 2022 recently crossed the stage, marking their accomplishment of becoming high school graduates earning their high school diploma or GED. Salem-Keizer Public Schools had more than 2,800 students celebrate this important milestone surrounded by their families, educators, friends and community members that supported them along their path to graduation.

The Class of 2022 is a graduating class that proved to be nothing short of remarkable. In 2020, when the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic began, these graduates were sophomores. Now, amidst a global pandemic, through impacts of wildfires, ice storms, comprehensive distance learning, hybrid learning, in-person instruction and for some classes, commencement ceremonies during an atmospheric river, 2022 graduates have continued to show their resilience and dedication to success.

As students round out the school year, let’s take a moment to reflect on some of the key points of pride to recognize the graduating Class of 2022.

Class of 2022 – Points of Pride

  • More than 2,800 students graduated with 100 students earning their GED
  • The Class of 2022 earned more than $59 million in scholarships
  • More than 100 students earned the Oregon State Seal of Biliteracy, distinguishing them as global learners and recognizing them as proficient and effective in one or more languages other than English
  • More than 1,500 graduates participated in Career and Technical Education courses during high school, preparing them for industry skills for careers in their futures
  • More than 1,000 graduates took advance placement or international baccalaureate courses during high school, the most rigorous courses offered in our schools

Visit our Facebook and Instagram pages to see more photos! You can also see galleries of the graduation ceremonies on the Statesman Journal’s website.

Face coverings optional effective March 12

As you likely know, there have been significant changes in recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Oregon Health Authority, and Oregon Department of Education regarding face coverings in schools.

We have carefully reviewed the guidance and met with our community health partners to provide expertise and feedback on these changes. All groups were supportive of our ability to keep students in schools safely without the universal use of face coverings when community transmission is low.

Effective March 12, 2022, face coverings will be optional in all district facilities, schools and school buses for students and staff. This includes the school day, before-school and after-school programs and extracurricular activities and athletics.

While face coverings will be optional, it is highly recommended that at-risk adults and students continue to wear KN95 masks. We know some students and adults will choose to wear face coverings and others will not. It is critical we support these decisions as we work together to build a community that supports each other in the decisions that protect their health or the health of those close to them.

Thank you for helping to ensure the health and safety of our schools and community.
