Salem-Keizer Public Schools has many ways for you to learn about bad weather causing school closures or delays. These include announcements on the district website, social media, the SKPS Monday Minutes email newsletter, announcements by local media and phone messages to your home.
Decisions about closing or delaying the start time of school are made by district officials by 5:15 a.m.
Salem-Keizer Public Schools Website
Information about school closures and delays due to bad weather can be found on the district’s website. There will be a banner on the homepage of the website announcing school closures or delays. In addition, you can find the latest information on the Emergency Closures webpage.
A message is posted to the district’s FlashAlerts account as soon as a decision is made to cancel school, delay school or close the district. The FlashAlerts website is the first place online that announcements are posted. Below is a direct link to Salem-Keizer’s FlashAlerts page, which you can bookmark to your favorites on your phone or computer.
Messages will be posted on the district’s Facebook and Twitter accounts as soon as a decision is made to cancel school, delay school or close the district. Below are direct links to Salem-Keizer’s Facebook page and Twitter account. In the past this type information was not posted to social media, so this is an improvement in how we let families know about school closures.
Monday Minutes Email Newsletter
Monday Minutes is Salem-Keizer’s new email newsletter. It goes out each Monday to subscribers, with special editions emailed out if school is cancelled or delayed due to bad weather. If you like to get updates via email, sign up for our email newsletter!
SchoolMessenger Telephone Notification
When schools are closed or start times delayed, all parents of Salem-Keizer students and all Salem-Keizer staff will get a recorded message to the phone number on record with the district. This message will tell you about school cancellations, delays to start times, or district closures. Calls begin going out at 6 a.m. Make sure your contact information is up to date. Families who need to update their phone number should contact their schools.
After a decision is made to close or delay school, local news media outlets are contacted. The media will mention the district only if there is a delay or closure. If you do not hear any announcement, it’s safe to assume that our schools are open or have resumed their regular schedules. More information about local media announcements here:
